S3 in the US (*any* car, really)

Yes, you can get an S3 as a "regular Joe" in the US.

You "simply" have to prove to the NHTSA that the car is of "historical or technical value". A friend of mine is trying to bring his Subaru Impreza 22B into the US under these rules in the coming months.  Whomever he talked to at NHTSA said that that was the exact type of car they'd made the rules for.

The catch: you can only drive the car 2500 miles/year. And you have to be an invidivual importer - no dealers and no resale for a given period.

Check out the exact wording here: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/1001/shodisplay.pdf (requires Acrobat Reader: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html).
