Re: MC conversion questions (4KQ)

Huw,
YOur right and wrong. The top part and basic structure is the
same as the 4kq/coupe. But there are TWO main differences. ONE is that
the lower valence piece on the 4kq is missing on the ur-q as mentioned by
whoever wrote that first message below. THe plastic valence on the ur-q
takes its place. THe second is above the bumper on the round portion of
the core support where on the 4kq/coupe the metal trim attaches to....well
this is drastically different on the ur-q as it has an additional metal
bar that stretches the entire cars width for the valence to attach to.
I spose to do a ur-q on the front of a 4kq you could just cut off
the lower valence portion (probably what the factory did, bet they came
from the same mold (stamping) ) ANd that top piece could be added from a
wrecked ur-q or maybe fabricated or maybe its not needed. Not sure
here. My ur-q's front valence was dead when I got it so I never saw how
it attached.
As for removing the top part and vertical supports, they are all
welded in place which is why many people Drop the engine on the
4kq/coupe/tqc. On ;my 4kq I modified this so that the vertical suppports
come off and the part that dissappears under the fender got cut and now
bolts so a plate that comes out from under the fender. So while the
Bottom half of Core Support stays, the Top half comes off with headlamps
or without in about 5-minutes. Makes things like Air Filter work, Turbo
work, Timing belt work a breeze.
NOt sure if that explained anything. Hope it did. For some good
pics check out Steve Eiche's web page.

Look closesly at the pics of his engine removal and you can see the
differences. Clearly no lower valence sheet metal. ANd that bar just
above where the bumper mounts are that isn't body color is the other
piece.

The Urq that Jim Mairs has in pieces all over his garage right now looks
an awful lot like a 4k/coupe in that area to me.

As I recall (there we go again...), the top of the center support is
identical. The three vertical parts that come next are also. The
curved cross piece below them also looked the same. The bumper mounting
brackets were the same too. I am sure if any of that center support
stuff had been able to come off, Jim would have done so to remove the
engine<<<<<
