Family pictures also confirms  that the thinnest is 3.00, this is for a Golf and will fit the WR engine, thanks for your help.

Iain,

Any good parts place should have what you need, this is
assuming that the shims are the same as the ones used in
4 cyl VW's.  I checked my box of spares & used shims
and 3.0 was the smallest I have.  BTW in the box was a
genuine VW/Audi shim at 3.1 that came out of my 1980
4000 (1.6 liter 4 cyl)
