Congratulations on your new purchase. I would go with a roof rack instead
of teh trailer mount.
I also am an avid mountain biker. On my previous car, 1986 Coupe, I had a
Thule rack and I have a Thule rack for my 91 200 Q. The mounting system
from my Coupe would be the same for your 4000 (both use rain gutter
mounts). The thule rack was rock solid, could haul three bikes, and was
modular so I could haul other things (such as a small sailboat or lumber).
I like the roof racks better than the rear mounting racks because I think
the roof rack mounts have a more solid connection to the bikes. Also, it
will be cheaper than buying a trailer hitch and a hitch mounted rack.
Either Thule or Yakima are good racks. If you are interested, or anyone
else is, I have teh gutter mounted Thule rack that I would sell. If you
are interested, email, and I'll give you the details.
