It's not that hard - most racing series (all SCCA, for example) require a 
kill switch accessable for cornerworkers - so it has to be near a window.  
However, theoretically you could put one anywhere.  If you do any heavy track 
driving, it would be wise to put one on - eventually, you will go 
off-roading, and it may turn serious, in which case you'd rather not have a 
major electric problem on top of everything else.
