13-900 Using the Water Pump to tension the Timing Belt

Tension the timing belt by rotating the water pump anti-clockwise (upwards).
The illustration does not show the hydraulic water pump stay that is also retained by one or both of the outboard (right, in the diagram) water pump adjustment screws. It is often necessary to ignore the alignment of the stay at this stage of assembly, and coax it into its proper place later with an incremental adjustment device.

13-901 Checking Timing Belt Tension

It should just be possible to turn the timing belt through 90° using thumb and forefinger. Regrettably Audi never divulged the calibration requirements for the said thumb and forefinger - Arnold Schwarzenegger or Mother Theresa?
On an installed engine, this test is much easier if performed from underneath the car.
