You gotta love this industry. One morning three press releases arrived from Compaq, IBM and EMC. All were based on the same IDC report:

Compaq:

In an annual report on the worldwide disk storage market released by leading industry analyst firm IDC, Compaq Computer Corporation has achieved the number one position in the 2001 global disk storage systems market (internal and external), pushing ahead of EMC in terms of revenue, terabytes sold and units shipped.

IBM:

EMC Corp, the world's top maker of data-storage systems, is expected to lose 6.2 percentage points of market share this year in external storage hardware sales, according to a forecast by research firm IDC.

The decline at EMC comes as archrival IBM Corp. picks up market share amid a sharp downturn in spending. EMC's market share for external hardware storage systems is expected to slip to 25.3 percent this year, compared with 31.5 percent in 2000, according to IDC.... IBM will edge out Compaq Computer Corp. for the No. 2 spot in that segment with a 11.6 percent share this year, up from 6.8 percent in 2000, according to IDC.

EMC:

For the fifth consecutive year, EMC Corporation is expected to finish as the world's #1 provider of external storage systems, and to maintain or extend its lead in the industry's major growth segments, according to a new 2001 report issued today by IDC. In its 2001 Disk Storage Systems Forecast and Analysis, IDC also forecasts EMC will take over the #1 market share position for the first time in the rapidly growing Networked Attached Storage (NAS) segment.
