If you don't want to do the surgical castration (that ball is in there to
keep the lock positioned as left after the key is extracted, I
think), take the lock assembly out and put it in a bath of Kroil for a day
to see if it doesn't loosen up. I was able to keep mine intact by patient
lubing of the ball housing until the corrosion broke loose and then worked
some white grease into it with a carpet knife blade.
