[200q20v] Bernie's "fix" and possibly a new metal distributor gear

Sorry for that off the wall comment Bernie, it was just that
Allen Swett's comment triggered the "stupid humor" in me.

On another subject, I talked to my friend who owns a gear manufacturing
machine shop, and he feels that he can do the distributor gear for $32-38
in a 50 piece quantity.

Originally he thought of 1060 steel with a carburizing post process,
suggesting
that such a gear would be bulletproof. I argued that we just wanted
something
substantially more rugged than the nylon gear presently in use.

He decided to use gear quality bronze (or bronze-aluminum alloy) save
the second case hardening step.... reduce the cost. Even this will long
outlast the nylon. He needs a gear sample to take all his measurements,
and if possible, a camshaft to look at the other side, to verify his
measurements.

I told him I would run it by the group.

Let me know how many of you would be interested in having someone
build a metal replacement gear. The complete distributor is a
safer solution, less hassle, but this is a bit cheaper.

Alan is right, Bernie. But I have a better solution. Sell
the car "as is". In that way you wont have to fix
anything!!!!!

Bernie, don't despair, there is a way out!!!

1) Loosen up the large (axle) nut from both wheels.

2) drive vehicle backwards or forwards a few feet

Both bearings are now BAD!!!

3) Replace both bad bearings
