Thanks for the tip Scott. I rarely if ever have the fan on high speed (hard
to miss that sound). However, I will upgrade to 80a, plus a spare at your
suggestion. I did blow a couple of 30's, so I went to the 40a.

The relay that supplies the fan is 70amp.  The fuse link from audi is 80amp.

I'm surprised you haven't blown the 40a fuse Jerry, under high fan speed,
you 
are over 40amps load.  I'd suggest you either get a 80-amp fuse, or run 2 
40amp fuses parrallel.  This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen mod.  
You might very well have protected your engine wiring, just don't forget
that 
what you did might be at the expense of a head gasket (or worse).

I replaced mine with some heavy gauge wire and a blade style fuse. I run a
40a fuse and no problems, even in the summer heat of south Florida. I keep a
spare fuse in the glove box just in case.
