In the past, I have taken the nuts of strut tops with an old, single hex
impact socket an Allen key, a bit of steel tube and a large Stillson (or
pipe wrench "over here").  

Basically, I would put the socket on the nut, put the long part of the Allen
key down the drive hole in the socket - into the hex part of the top of the
strut, then clamp the Stillsons onto the outside of the socket and put the
bit of tube on the end of the Allen key and undo.

Obviously the socket is going to be in the "if I get to use it again, it's a
bonus" category, as the top part of the socket gets a bit cabbaged.
Also be careful, 'cos if the set up slips, you can end up taking a bit of
paint off the top of your wings (ok then, "fenders").

The new stuff may well go together with the impact gun, 'cos the threads are
nice and clean, but you could always try putting some load on the shock by
jacking the strut up a bit. I always used to undo the strut top nut, take
off the CV/ Hub nut, then jack and remove the wheel, when changing front
shocks. Otherwise the removal method will work, but you will need a 9 point
thang to stop the strut turning.

Anyhooo, I know that's not the answer to the question you asked, but if
special tools are hard to find...
