Jim,
Nothing fancy - brute force and strong fingers, sometimes clip one side and use
screwdriver to pry agoinst the manifold whild tip forces against the middle of the clip.
Removing stuff really won't make it easier to force the clips in.
I have done many of these and has gone from seemingly impossible at first to not so bad
- Just a matter of getting the hang of it. Step back, take a deep breath and try again.

I did manage to release the distributor cap, and confirm the rotor is turning, but
getting the 2 metal clips back into position proved too much for me. Do you need to
remove the intake manifold to see what you are doing, or is it all by blind touch?
