Fuel pump without the special tool

I did it by hand the first time, out doors below zero temps and a near full
 tank of gas, never again!

It was easier to get apart than put back in. It sort of twist and snaps
in and out while pressing down. That was ten years ago. When the check
valve failed I bought the tool and did it. Much easier to change when on your
own terms and not crisis maintenance out doors during a Minnesota January.

Unfortunately, I gave the tool to the guy that bought the car. I would
try and borrow or rent the tool from some one on the list.

Good Luck.
Pete, 91 Avant sold and missed.

Anybody had luck getting the lid off the fuel pump holder without the
VAG3214 tool? Need to change out the check valve and so I need to get the
pump out of the tank. All nice and clean down there which surprised me.

Whatever has to be done has to be done one handed. Blasted Teutonic factory
tools! Pump made 208k miles. No one has ever been in there I am sure.
Factory insulation was still taped over the lid.
