[A8] New to The List

Yes, I did them within the last year. The one that requires removing the strut is, I believe, the front one, and its bolt is vertical (and through the strut mounting plate) and the arm pivots freely on it. But its movement around the bolt is on the horizontal plane, and its vertical motion is from its rubber bushing. The rear arm has a horizontal bolt, so its vertical motion is around the bolt, which when tightened, holds it securely, so all motion is from the bushing. That's why the suspension has to be in normal ride position when it is tightened, so that the bushing isn't stressed. Or, using the Bentley technique, it is tightened out of the car at the (not very) precise angle it should be at when installed. Because its bolt is horizontal and not mounted to the strut, it can be easily replaced without removing the strut.
The popping sound (that triggered actual list activity!) might be from that control arm if it was tightened out of position, and if so, is not a good thing.

Sure it's not both? I was pretty certain that it specifies to set BOTH upper
arms at the proper angle to match vehicle rest height.
As an FYI to anybody out there that hasn't changed their upper arms yet: It's
a sorta annoying job because Audi assembled them in such a way that the
securing bolts can not be removed without removing the entire strut assembly
from the car. If you re-install the bolts the other way around (bolt head
closer to the spring) you can in the future remove the arms without pulling
the strut assembly.
