[A8] Transmission fluid contamination

My friend's 99 A8 transmission is toast.

Although the code indicated possible 'transmission fluid contamination',
after the trans service it was exactly the same. The contamination may have
been the transmissions internal materials we observed attached to the
magnets. The typical clutch wear. Service has been every 60K, currently
210K.

Symptom was simply that the car would not go forward without engaging
limp-home mode. Then it would slowing accelerate until at cruising it felt
normal, but locked into whatever 'gear' limp-home had chosen. Reverse was
good and solid, I could back up anywhere.

Contemplating the next move.
