Happily I've not had any trouble from the rack on mine, so I don't know 
the costs of a replacement. B5 S4s in reasonable condition are still 
worth a fair bit, so I'd be quite surprised if it wasn't worth the fix.

Anyway, I had to take issue with this bit of your post:

Mine's coming up for 200k (a couple of months away, probably), and no 
trouble at all from the turbos. Ok so they *can* die considerably 
earlier than that, but I certainly wouldn't say you're overdue at 140k. 
If, as you say, you've looked after the car, not thrashed the turbos 
when cold etc, there's no reason to think that they won't last another 
100k at least.

It's up to you, but I wouldn't write it off just yet... They're awesome 
cars, you'll regret it :)
