In my post you read that I was recommending that John not go ahead with the
project either, just clarifying my understanding of the earlier post. FYI,
I can tell you that a 5-speed will run with an automatic IC ...
unfortunately I have one of these in my car :-( AFAIK the only price I pay
is that the cruise control doesn't work and I have to look at the
illuminated "PRNDL" display. While it is true that the ABS signals hook up
to the tranny box as well (so that the controller can detect wheel slip and
lock the center diff as needed), I'm sure the ABS would continue to work
just fine with the tranny computer removed. There are differences between
the engines in automatics and manuals ... TFA shows that they have different
cams and even the rear diff unit is different on the 5-speed as compared to
the manual (the 5-speeds have the same rear diff that is used with the ABH
4.2l engine equipeed automatics).

The point still stands ... it is still _possible_ to convert a V8 with an
automatic to have a manual transmission. Anyone considering such a project
is advised to do quite a bit of homework before applying too much in the way
of funding though ...
