VIN construction from description

Hi All,

Anybody know how to construct a VIN from a description and the serial
production number?  I pored over my Bentley and the family album with little
success.  Here's what I was working from:  1990 200 Turbo Quattro 5 speed,
prod number 056548.  Even if I got everything else right I don't know of a
way to calculate the check digit at position 9.

Another subject (a little easier I hope).  Are all quattro's 5 speed or
manual shift say up through the 1995 models?
