Hi Mike again,

"thanks for the input, I'll check it out ASAP. i took out the dimmer switch and
the headlight switch to see the third socket in the head light switch (thick
red one, must be the power wire) was melted. i also took the dimmer switch
apart to see that the metal side walls with the pickups for the dash lights
had burnt on both sides"

If you can I'd try soldering wire over that gap, a new dimmer switch is 53 gbp
(80 odd dollars!!!) according to the dealer I phoned yesterday!! I managed to
solder mine with a bit of wire bridging the gap last night, the two plates in
the dimmer switch just slide out for easier access. Checked voltage to the
switch at about 12V, checked the resistance of the dimmer and it went from a
max of 21ohms down to 1 or 2, which I think is what it should be. I then put the
dimmer switch in and it worked fine:)

It is still worth checking out the headlight switch and the reason the wiring
melted, I am guessing that a short in there as it melted took out the dimmer
switch, the switched feed for the dimmer and instrument lights is in that
headlight switch somewhere.

It's great, I haven't had lit instruments for ages now, I don't have to guess
my speed from engine note (I got 75mph on the motorway down to a fine art!) and
tyre squeel anymore:)

hth,

Graham
