Hi all,
Thanks for the useful and kind replies to my posting about power steering
pump replacement. You were all quite correct, and ETKA was utterly wrong:
the CGT uses ATF for its hydraulics, instead of Pentosin.
The actual replacement of the pump (we had a known good used example) is
easy, if somewhat messy. Hardly any need for WD40 to undo the bolts, even
the banjo bolts came off relatively easy. I'd gotten enough crush washers
from the dealership (ETKA calls for four of one size and two of the other-
I couldn't find a use for more than three). We spilled little fluid on
removal, more so when mounting the new pump.
All in all, I'd say we used about half a litre of ATF when replenishing.
Getting rid of air in the system was easy, the job took about half an hour,
and about the same again for getting rid of the spilled ATF.
One disappointment: the noise we had diagnosed as a worn bearing in the p/s
pump turned out to be something else, maybe an overtightened timing belt or
a worn water pump. Job done, accomplished nothing... anyway, it was a nice
enough job to do- we had fun, beer and pizza and it was nice and sunny all
day long.
It's official: the quattro list is a better resource than ETKA. :-)
Thanks, friends.
Regards, Tom
