4000 Power Mirror Switch Fix

Excuse me if this is well known but it's a new idea to me.

As with many 4000 owners, my power side mirrors didn't work properly.
On one of my 4000s, the mirrors didn't work at all. That one turned
out to be broken wires in the loom at the door hinge. But even once I
repaired that, the controls worked intermittently at best. Here's my
solution that worked on both of my 4000s.

You're probably ready to hear me say "open the switch and clean it" or
give you an elaborate plan for rigging a switch or a set of switches to
take the original's place. Or, maybe you're not. Anyway, here it goes.

I noticed that the switch worked fine when I took it out of its place
in the door handle. With the handle off of the door and the switch
connected to its harness, it worked fine. "How is this condition
different than before?", I asked myself. When the switch is in the
door handle it is squeezed with a fair amount of force by two bent
spring steel tabs that are designed to keep it in place. It seems like
these tabs exert enough force to distort the switch to the point that
the internals lose contact with each other. I removed the tabs by
CAREFULLY taking the bottom cover off of the switch and sliding the
tabs out. I then put the cover back on the switch and put the door
handle back together and shimmed the front of the switch to hold it in
place. VIOLA!!! Now it works.
