Ditch CIS?

hey, that's one thing that bugs me about my 4k. With the GTI, when you
turned the key to 'on', you could hear
the pump prime. I like that(plus it would always start with a flick of the
key, but with the 4k, you gotta crank
that baby over a few times!)

Is there a way to replace the relay so that it pumps before I start
cranking?

Sure, it's like priming it. However, I can tell you
this seems to depend on the fuel pump relay. I once
drove an '86 4kq that always primed when the key was
initially turned. One day, wouldn't start, couldn't
hear pump priming. So, I replaced the fuel pump relay
(the replacement wasn't VW/Audi, might have been
Jap?), turn key hoping this really was the problem,
pump doesn't prime! So I'm thinking something else
must be wrong, but try to start it anyway. Starts
right up! Ran happily for months w/that relay, just
never primed (shrug).
