85 4KQ Light Switch Problems

Hey All, Long time no list.  Here's a perplexing one for all the gurus.
Does anyone know what the red wire that goes into the light switch is for?
I have been having a problem with the switch getting hot and melting only
the tab that connects to the red wire subsequently causing the dash lights
to not function.  Have tried another light switch and rewired a new harness
to no avail.  Everything is fine for a bit and then the symptoms with the
dash lights going out begins to occur again.  I changed out all the external
bulbs and checked the dash bulbs to ensure they were the correct ones.  Any
help would be greatly appreciated.
