> With my sister going off to college in a few weeks and not taking her car (1988 VW Quantum Syncro) I am thinking of fixing it up for her this year. Next year she is going to take it with her. The first thing I want to do is replace the long block. The NF is the one I want right, it has the injector holes in the head?

Yes.

> The NF starts out with 10:1 compression, I know it runs a knock sensing ignition but how much initial advance does it have, or how much would be safe to run with 91-92 octane?

12 degrees BTDC stock. I think we set Brendan's at 6 to play it safe.
You would want to experiment if you want the maximum advance without
knocking, and tell us what you find... though for a car that is off at
school, you might want to be conservative unless she is a savvy car nut
too.

> The NF/NG engines have an exhaust manifold/downpipe with dual outlets. The Quantum Syncro and 4kq have the 3 outlet header downpipe. Is the 3 outlet one worth any power over the 2 outlet one?

I do not know - thought the 2 outlet holes do look about as big as the
three put together. the 2 outlet one is a 2 pc manifold, as well.

> Do any of the 5 cylinder intake manifolds flow any better than others? I would want to put on the best flowing one even if its not worth much gain. How about porting the head?

porting and polishing ought to be good for both these parts - and gasket
matching. Others have done more here, I think Javad has posted brief
descriptions of what an amateur can do safely and usefully.

> I am hoping to get 150-160hp with a K&N bigger throttle body (if any gain is to be had) better flowing intake manifold (if there is one) ported head and a cam. The exhaust is already 2.25" which is all I want to keep some torque. What cams are recommended? !

the NF/NG cam is supposed to be pretty good already. what's this bigger
throttle body you speak of? will it fit Audis?
