High output bulbs just melt the sockets for type 9004 bulbs, ask me how I
know. The new Xenon gas filled bulbs (as opposed to halogen, and they're
not HID, unfortunately, many are blue tinted. Don't get those. Availible
as NAPA, and Wagner) are more efficient at lower wattages (i.e. 50-60W)
and, more importantly, seem to throw a better beam pattern (at least with
type 44 turbo lights), than high wattage 9004 bulbs. I thought the
improvement was worthwhile, check the archives from about 2 years ago on
how to do the 9007 conversion.
