You can siphon out the contents of the header tank.  This drops the coolant level below the top of the radiator -> head hose, so you
can then take this hose off the radiator and put the siphon tiube down it to clear out almost all the coolant to the thermostat.

I wouldn't recommend this trick on a plastic radiator end, though.  Leave those hoses alone if at all possible.
