the real thing that is in the way is the A/C evaporator. You either
have to move that out of the way, which either means an ACectomy or
removal.reinstallation of the refrigerant.
To avoid that quagmire, you remove the "white box," yes. Four screws
hidden under the plenum mounted blower cover will pretty much release
it.
plenum - that space between the firewall and windsheild.
blower cover - the white box under the black cover in the plenum,
removed by undoing four screws and prying like crazy.
that is what comes to mind from my feeble aging memory, anyway...
