I think you're talking about the latch mechanism. I don't know how your
door expert could come to the conclustion that all is fine with the rods
etc. without actually seeing them or having them work.

While I have no personal experience with this problem, I asked a friend
who works on 4N cars, he's come across it twice:
On one occasion the problem was a broken outside door handle, and a latch
mechanism set to "child proof" (door cannot be opened from inside car).
His solution was to break the door handle and slip a pair of long bent
pliers into the hole and pull on the opening rod that actuates the door
stricker latch.
On the other occasion he deduced from the condition of the other doors
(stricker mechanisms all sticking, no evidence of lube since the car left
Inglostadt) that the "box" may be stuck. He lubed it somehow by spraying
penetrating oil and products of this nature in, on and around the latch
through the door seam and window slit. Those little red tubes attached
to the side of the cans seem to work well. After two days of lubing, and
some force the door popped open.
It's been a while since I've had the rear door panels off, if the 200 is
anything like the 5K's, I think you could probably get the panel off by
removing the back seat, removing the screws, and then forcing the rear
cover up. You might break some of the plastic push pins, but those are
readily available at most body supply shops or Audi dealers.
