If you strip off the old leather, you will find wood under there. With a
little work, you can make a nice wooden shift knob for free.
1. Unscrew the thing from the shaft.
2. Strip off the old leather.
3. Remove the shift pattern on the top. I believe it pops out from pressure
exerted underneath. I left mine on during sanding.
4. Sand the thing.
5. Varnish it.
I left the plastic shift pattern on when I sanded. The plastic got all
scratched. No matter, when I varnished the wood, I also varnished the
plastic. The varnish made all the scratches disappear.
When you strip the leather off, the wood underneath doesn't look so great.
However, the sanding cleans it, and the varnish makes it a nice color.
