Hi,
When i bought my '89 90, i remarqued that the speedo/tachymeter had been
replaced.
The problem was remarked at 51000' km (a new tachy is ordered by the audi
dealer) but the tachymeter was changed later, at 62000' km on the clock
(and 'distance' was but back to zero)

I often hear about such problems on the list but what is the 'normal'
problem; 'speed'-meter out of order ? 'distance'-meter out of order ? both
out ? both intermittent ?
As i would like to know if my car may have more than 62000' km on the clock
when the new tachy was installed...

thanks

Hi guys,

I have starting problems with Audi 200 Turbo Automatic 1988.
It has a MC engine with Hitachi MAC-12D box.

Sometimes when starting it doesn't give a spark at all. The diagnostics says
2111 and 2113, HALL and RPM senders. Also when RPMs are above 3000 the
check-engine light is on which could be a knocking sensor problem but there
is no diagnostics faults about knock sensor. I have changed the RPM sender
and checked the HALL sender with LED and it seems to work ok. Also the
wirings to ECU are ok I quess that the coil and ignition power stage are ok
because when the engine doesn't start there is no signal to ignition power
stage. The distributor shaft seems to have quite a big cap when turning it
by hand, I wonder if it might be the problem...the engine also "hits back"
sometimes when starting which could mean the ignition timing being too
"early" but I have done the basic timing adjustment for the distributor and
it should be ok.

What is the relationship between TDC sensor in flywheel and HALL sender?
Should they give the signals at the same time?

Is the hall sensor a inductive or capacitive unit, I mean if I measure the
Hall sensor, is there continuty between pins or not?

Thank you in advance

Subject: CGT clutch R&R parts list
Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 21:04:30 -0500

I further looked into my '86 CGT tranny/clutch problems today, and its looks
as if it is the clutch that is the problem. Although I have never attempted
to do so before, I am going to do the replacement myself. I have compiled a
list of items from various sources that seem to be logical to replace:

035 141 033 clutch plate
035 141 117Q pressure plate
088 141 165B release bearing
016 141 181 sleeve
046 105 313D needle bearing
855 399 151D rubber tranny mount
016 311 113B sealing washer

I have received quotes on the above items, and the best one has come in at
$185 (Sachs clutch plate and pressure plate), which seems reasonable (Blau
wants $189.95 for just the clutch plate, pressure plate and release
bearing!). Clutch master and slave cylinders appear to be functioning
normally. Did I miss anything? I have looked at the procedure for tranny
removal and clutch replacement, and it seems pretty straightforward. I am
going to have to get the car in the air for better access to the underside.
Ramps are out of the question because you need to pull the driveshafts to
pull the tranny. Putting the car up on jackstands seems the way to go, but
will it provide enough clearance? Also, where is the best place to locate
the jackstands? A part of the procedure mentions "lifting" the front of the
engine, which I guess is to angle the tranny downward to allow for easier
removal. I do not have the Audi tool to do this, so what else would work?
Are their any special tools required for the job (alignment tools, hex head
wrenches, etc)? Any BTDTs greatly appreciated.

I have also been having some fun while the list was down. First,
big empty parking lots have never had so much appeal as they do now!
WEEEEEEE! Some crappy pics, but you can almost make out the rims through
the cloud of snow.
Second, For some reason whenever I lock the front diffs, my car
pulls to the right very strongly. It doesn't seem to do it when they aren't
locked. Any suggestions?
Third, Heres a little story....
I now I'm 23 and this seems a little imaturish, but shutup, I enjoy
sledding! So one day we're supposed to go sledding on the slope of a small
dam. Coincidently underneath a sign that says "Stay Off Dam Slope", which
is funny in itself. I have never been to this location, so I waited in the
general vicinity of the area until the others arrived. They arrive and I do
a U-turn to meet up with them and use up the entire space of the road, and
part of what I think is the shoulder. WRONG! It wasn't the shoulder, but a
rather deep ditch that the snow plows had filled with snow, then scraped off
the top so that it was even with the road, appearring to be the shoulder.
DOH! Quattro only works when your tires touch something! I find out the
hard way that the saying is true... Quattro doesn't keep you from getting
stuck in snow. It just helps you get stuck in deeper snow. Of course, I
have been blabbing on and on about how great Quattro is ever since I bought
the car last spring, so now everybody seems to think this is ironic and they
need photographic evidence so that I couldn't deny it later. Great pics, if
someone has a sight I could upload them to for everybody to see.
ANYWAY... two days later, the loser who suggested it was such a
great idea to take pictures of me in my not so quattro ditch, calls me up
after driving his car into.... get this!.... a ditch. So I go out and
somebody had chains, so I hooked her up to the sub frame underneath my car
and pulled his car out of the ditch he "Thelma and Louise"d his car into.
And this is the story of the little quattro that could. Thank you. Also
great pics.

Subject: A nifty package from Audi
To: quattro at audifans.com (Audi Mailing List)
Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 08:55:06 -0800 (PST)

I just received a cool package from Audi. It came in a 11"x11"x2.5"
silver box, containing a "Welcome to the Audi family" parchment sheet,
a beautiful hardbound and boxed book "Sharing a singular vision" containing
60+ glossy pages outlining Audi technology, design, performance and
emotion, plus a fold-out chronology of Audi history 1899-2000. Nothing in
there I don't already know, but it's such a nicely put together package.
The book has a dark grey hard cover with the four rings embossed on the
it, and the box it goes in is silver, also with the four rings it.
An excellent coffee table piece!

Also included in the package is a silver envelope box with a congratulatory
letter on my purchase of the my S4 and a few pamphlets outlining the Audi
Advantage program, Roadside assistance program and membership cards and
decals, features of the Audi, etc.

I wonder if all new Audi owners now get this? Or is the S4 somehow a
more "elite" model? Back in '96 when I bought my A4q I certainly didn't
get anything like this... Any recent A4 1.8t owners here that got this too?
This definitely enhances that "feel good" factor of new Audi owners.

P.S. Quoted from page 33 of the book: "In the considerable mythology of
the three leading German luxury car makers you'll come upon familiar
stereotypes: The whale. The shark. And the dolphin."
     Hmm!

Short of opening it up and measuring the diameter of
every drilled hole, I think you're doing the prudent
thing. Test it's suitability on car (CO readings,
plug color)? If it seems to perform well then I guess
you've found your answer.

You have identified what probably produced the suffix
change. They have changed suffix for much less than
that. The change from a hex-head bolt to a socket
head for an adjusting screw is enough to trigger this.
I believe the VAG parts interchange is much larger
than documented if you are will to transfer some
ancillary items.

Can you use the adjusting screw from a much more
common (cheap) metering head? A 4 cyl. maybe? It
would be worth it to salvage a head you might actually
need.

It would be really cool to find out the product
updates as they occurred. Every ordered change,
whether at Audi or Bosch has documents describing
cause, proposed solutions, costs/benefits, etc. They
won't change gasket paper without a document trail.
It would certainly make our jobs easier.

Dec. and I thought something like that might have
happened to Dan's.

Are you sure the "rebuilt" alternator is actually

I find electrical problems to be very difficult to
diagnose without a multimeter and an electrical
schematic (Bentley). You need to find out if the
alternator is producing output voltage, if the battery
is receiving it, and if not where the problem is in
between. Without a meter, you can't really tell 1+2,
and without a schematic, it is very hard to track
#3.(In general)

No copyright on this picture - use and distribute as you will to show
anyone thinking of changing a timing belt what can happen if you don't
change the water pump:

And if you get a dealer to change it - check the parts listed on the

terminals and general use. What I've been looking for is a crimper that
will crimp new Audi factory wire terminals correctly, the ones which fold
back into the wire and into the insulation for positive contact and strain
relief.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Where I can find such a tool?

Thanks!
