There are laws against this.  I believe it's called the Harrison Act.  For 
example, Audi cannot deny coverage for the rear spring breaking in half 
because you used a non-Audi oil filter.  Even if the oil filter 
failed.  They would have to demonstrate that the non-factory part is 
directly responsible for the other problem to deny coverage (for instance 
if the failed filter in the above example caused a bearing failure in the 
engine.)  You can check with SEMA (Specialty Equipment Manufacturers 
Assoc.) for more information.
