87 cgt cooling prbs

Since i seem to be manual-less these days...i need to ask some experienced 
listers a couple of questions...
As i wrote before..the temp gauge on my 87.5 CGT blinks constantly while 
driving..A few people have recommended that i replace the expansion 
tank...thinking that the float sensor has gone bad...I think i am going to do 
this...but i have noticed that in the morning as i am about to start up the 
car...the temp gauge reads about 3/4 hot and doesnt blink...
could a bad expansion tank float signal a 3/4 hot temp signal??  I thought it 
was either all or nothing...Low coolant or enough coolant...
should i look to other sensors that connect to the temp gauge and replace 
them?  If so which senders would they be?  I need a manual...amongst other 
things...
