rear half shaft

My car has been sitting in stands for a few weeks awaiting a few parts
to finish my suspension rebuild. Yesterday with parts in hand I finally
performed the task, and only a few details remain for today. There is a
slight problem however. The rear diff has been supported by two jack stands
for a while, with the rear half shafts just sort of drooping down.
Yesterday after installing the outer joints with fresh grease and boots, I
went to coax them into the hub splines and was dismayed to find that the
inner joints are stiff. I was able to coas the passenger's side joint into
its housing, but the driver's side wont go. When I say stiff I mean, as in
stuck. I can rotate it, but it won't move axially. Does anyone have any
suggestions please? Do I have to pull the whole shaft? Some one please give
me a hand I'd truly appreciate it.

                                                    Sincerely,
                                                    Dave
