'93 90 slushbox weirdness?

So I guess my 90 is a bit jealous of the good time I had in my mother's
brand-new A6 4.2q (wow...), because the automatic transmission is
starting to act a bit funny.
It's always had this thing where when you shift from Reverse to Drive,
it takes a second or for Drive to actually engage; well now it takes a
few seconds, like 5 or 6 or more, and it helps a lot if I'm giving it a
bit of gas. I found this out after nearly backing in to my neighbor
after pulling out of the driveway (which is a bit of an incline).
Any thoughts on what this might be? Do I need to be looking for a
transmission/new car? I'm going to check the fluid tomorrow, thought I
don't see any evidence that it's been leaking.
Thanks as usual,
