Are 4kq speedo heads repairable?

this speedometer thread is getting rather carried way, if you really
think your 86 or 87 4kq has a mechanical speedometer, disconnect the
odometer cable and watch that the speedometer still functions. (The
speed sender is also shown in the wiring diagrams line ~231 in
Bentley).
So long as your speedometer is working it isn't really an issue what
makes it go, so just be happy. If doesn't work correctly, try cleaning
the electrical connections.
I do actually have something productive to add to this topic in regards
to Bryan's comment.

At least on the units I took apart there is an alignment mark at the
outer edge of the gage face. I think you may have to have the
speedometer/odometer unit removed from the cluster to see it. The mark
is a few "minutes" counter clockwise from the stop. The speedometers I
reassembled using the mark are at least as accurate as before I removed
the needle.
