Timing Belt Change

"Steve Ensch" <ensch1 at earthlink.net> asked:

[I am preparing myself for the timing belt change. I am looking for the
special tools 1)2084 (crankshaft pulley securing tool) 2)2079 (Audi torque
multiplier). I heard the 2084 or equivalent could be obtained from Snap-On,
however the
other I have heard no references of. Does anyone have these available ie
parts suppliers?]

I question the need for the torque multiplier. When I did my timing belt, I
corresponded with others on the Q-list to get the TRUE torque which is
applied to the bolt without the tool. As I recall (and I will check on
request) the required torque was about 320 foot-pounds. (Don't take that as
gospel, but it's close...)

So I got a piece of pipe 4 feet long, stuck it over my 1/2" breaker bar, and
using my carefully calibrated forearms, applied 80 pounds of push to the
bolt. 4x80=320. Remember that a foot-pound is measure ONE foot from the
bolt - so extending the point of force over a measured distance can work.
Was I precise? No. Did it matter? Also no.

Remember also that when you're torquing a bolt to 300+ foot-pounds, an error
plus/minus of 20 or so foot-pounds is not significant. It might be when
you're dealing with 50 lbs/ft, but the percentage error is insignificant at
the higher torques. Let's face it, if you get that bolt damn tight, it will
probably stay.

Worked perfectly for me.
