Where did you come from (and did your GTi suffer the pinion gear shaft
hammering the case open problem? I'd like to start a class action against
VW if I can get enough signatures. It's a much more common problem than
you might think. Only seemed to happen to short ratio 5 speed boxes from
'84 through '86).
