Heater core upgrade possible at all?

I noticed that all 4Kqs and pre-84 4K non-qs cars uses heater core
171 819 031 E (the 171 indicating a VW origin), but 85 and up 4K non-qs
have 811 819 031 (An Audi 4K specific number).

I don't know what the difference is between the two or whether they are
interchangeable.  Just a heads up when you buy one.
