Let's see if I can post again...(I was one of the many who's messages
landed in eternal bounce mode)

In a message dated 10/9/2001 Brett Dikeman writes:

<< Parts and cars should be posted to the marketplace, unless
it's an unusual item. For example, an '85 UrQ in the US would be
appropriate to post to the list, or a track-prepped 4kQ, and so on. >>

While I do agree Brett's opinion on this in principle, I also know that
from time to time as quattro enthusiasts we get asked for favors and
advice from not-so-fanatical friends. Now, the best advice in the case
of "how do I sell a late model Audi" probably is to refer the person to
the marketplace and Auto Trader, etc., but one never knows when doing
someone a favor and posting it as a FS post to the list (regardless of
commonality) may also help a list member who is looking.

Having just bought my wife a new (to us and unfortunately not an Audi)
car that would seem common and easy to find I would have appreceated
like posts steering me towards as many options as possible. I tend to
like to buy used cars from the original owner in a private party deal
and my experience in looking for the above mentioned car was that Auto
Trader and dealerships did not find me the 1994 Ovlov 850 turbo wagon we
wound up buying at the price we got it for.

Don't get me wrong, I think it should remain Audis only (for the most
part...Bill Elliot's old Lotus would be kinda tempting if I had extra
scratch and I never would have known had it not been intermixed with
that Ur-Q FS post), but I'm not sure how, assuming cars FS posts from
private parties are still allowed, someone is to make that judgement.
Commonality isn't the issue. Source, records, color, options, price,
etc. all play in and who knows, that A4 2.8 may be just the car a lister
local to that seller is searching for.

In other words, in the opinion of a list member of over 5+ years I don't
see a problem with the post at all and encourage people to spread the
word on things they feel may be of interest to other list members
provided it is on topic and non-commercial. Again, just my opinion
though. Finding a good deal on just the right used car is never easy and
when you're looking you need all the help you can get. I will remind
everyone to please always include location in all cars FS posts.
