HELP with window lifts

I just want to say I hate Audi wondow lifts!  Ahh,
much better.  OK, my 83 UrQ came with shot power
windows, so I found some manual ones in the junk yard.
 They seemed to work OK, although a bit stiff.  I just
put my door pannels back on and now all of a sudden
the cranks got so stiff they don't even work anymore,
and my driver side window is stuck half down.  I can't
tell if it is the lift or the glass that is stuck.  Is
there a good procedure for getting these things to
work reliably?  Anybody have a good driver side window
lift to sell?  Thanks.
