Baffle at the End of the Mass AirFlow Sensor, on the inside of the Airbox?

Hey Al,, I havea  question.  There is a baffle that is a cylinder with a
cross shape in the middle of it on the inside of the upper part of my
AirBox on my95 S6, what is it for, and do people remove them? No I am
not asking about the MAF screens, those are staying on!
