Craig,

I installed a custom filter in the air intake of the 4000 Q. Just cut to
size some of the home HVAC dilter available at Home Depot and duct tape
around the edges(optional) and insert into the opening.

On the 5000 TQs I used the same material cut to fit on the sides of the
cowling/drainage tray (big black platic piec that has AUDI stamped in it.

Keeps out leaves, debris and hopefully rodents, but I suppose they could
chew through if they wanted.

I always remove the cowling and vacuem and air blast (hose if necessary) all
dirt and debris when I obtain one of these cars. I've seen a few that had
some rather nasties growing in there - just asking for problems.

[On the way to work last week, I needed to turn on the AC to operate the =
defroster on my '92 100S. Upon doing so, about 2 lbs of sunflower seed =
emptied into the passenger foot well (I had the recirc button on). =
Further investigation today showed that the rodent (probably a chipmunk) =
entered through the fresh air flap on top of the heater box. I was =
surprised to see that there is no screen on the inside of this opening =
to prevent rodents, leaves, etc from getting in. I looked in the Family =
Album, and there appear to be no pics of the heater box (just of the =
blower motor housing). Should there be some sort of a screen in place on =
this opening, or did Audi neglect to think of this? I sure hope I don't =
need to get a cat...
