using smoke to find vacuum leaks?

Anyone know of a good way to set up a smoke system that can be hooked up to the
induction system to try and visually find an air leak - short of buying some $950
system, that is? This seems like the fastest, easiest way to diagnose a leak, and a
hell of a lot more scientific than carb cleaner or propane (especially when there
are no idle problems). Does anyone have this sort of product in a one use can for
the shade-tree mechanic (and, if not, why not)?

If I can't find such a product, I'm thinking maybe I can fall back on my childhood
experience of making dry ice bombs and rig up some sort of system with CO2. Or I
suppose any kind of smoke would be OK provided I flush it out of the system with
regular air before running the car. Anyway, any advice or tales from experience
would be helpful. Thanks,

Joel
