It's called "planned obsoletion". It's what keeps the US economy so strong.
Build a product - I don't care if we're talking cars, sneakers or houses -
and engineer it to last only for 100K miles / 1.5 years / 65 years, and then
sell new stuff - keeping the wheels of the economy spinning...
But then why is it that the German economy is (or was - before the fall of
the wall) so strong? Oh! That must be because people get to spend their hard
earned cash on stuff that's *supposed* to be consumable goods, instead of
having to constantly re-invest in what's supposed to be "durable" goods,
such as cars, shoes, houses...
