Help - Replacing hydraulic tappets/lifters

My wife's 1989 Avant (2226cc KU engine at about 250k miles) is sounding more
and more like a diesel tractor. I bought a set of hydraulic tappets for it
a couple of years ago and I need to install them the next dry/warm weekend
we get.
Has anyone any advice?
Do I need to take the large gear wheel off the end of the cam shaft?
Is the cam shaft likely to have suffered excessive wear as a result of one
or two hydraulic tappets not functioning properly for a year or two? How
can I tell?
What happens if the new tappets were stored upside down for a while?
How to I bleed them once they're installed - turn the engine over a few
times by hand?
