I'll bet you don't live in the midwest salt belt. The Asian vehicles I see
everyday seem to melt away between 3 - 5 years depending on how well they are
cared for. When I was a kid, a car body would out last the running gear and
it was standard practice to rebuild the engines / transmissions ( @ 80K
miles) then run the vehicle until it finally rusted away (about 120K miles).
When I started driving watercooled VWs, I had the opposite problem, the
running gear outlasting the bodies. On the Audi's, the body and running gear
easily outlast the other components (which only have a life expectancy of a
standard vehicle). I have a number of (non car) neighbors ask me how I can
afford to drive such nice looking cars until I tell them they are 11 - 14
years old. Then they look at their Cadillac or Lexus and wonder what's
wrong. (they also ask why I spend so much time in the garage, but that's a
different story)
