Someone suggested the same thing to me. I tried it a couple of
weeks ago, when driving my FWD Coupe up a steep snowwy hill
to my girlfriend's parent's house. Normally, in the snow, you only
reach the top when you're having some momentum. I had to stop
because someone stepped in front of the car. Then couldn't get it
moving again, so I tried this trick of gently applying the brakes while
one front wheel was slipping.
Didn't work... had to roll back about 20 meters and try again. Guess
I better buy a quattro.
