type44 CC question

Over the past few years, I've replaced everything (yup) in my '87 5kcstq's
CC system w/new or rebuilt stuff.  Here's what it's doing now:

*brightness of CC display changes, as if I was turning the lights on and
off. Related to license plate light burned out? Doesn't do this in relation
to dash lights; plus blower acts normally regardless of what display is
doing, so it's not on/off-ing.

*doesn't make cool air in hot weather! (hey, that sucks) I can't tell if
it's b/c it's so hot outside that it's just wimpy, or if there's an actual
failure/broken stuff. Reason being is that in not-quite-as-hot weather (say,
below 80F), it seems to cool fine.

If it is some sort of failture, perhaps a refrig leak somewhere, or interior
or exterior temp sensor? Things to check?

Once repaired, I may be interested in elec pusher fan on condensor...that'd
be nice for SoCal heat waves in my black interior; plus I drive to AZ a lot
to visit family...Hmmm [finger to chin]
