You might try looking for blockages of the air plenum that channels  air
through the system. If the air can't flow, it can't become cooled (or
heated) and the system doesn't work very well.

Leaves and debris frequently accumulates in the air plenum behind the
engine compartment.

This space can be examined from inside the cabin, or from the outside, by
lifting the hood and the bay cover.  Look up behind the glove box for a
rectangular spring-loaded trap door about 4 inches by 8 inches, and lift it
open. Inspect the space (air plenum) behind the trapdoor, using a
flashlight. You might find it totally blocked with leaves and debris. Clean
it out with fingers and vacuum the evaporator (radiator-type thing) you
find there.

If you still have that wall behind the glove box covered with fascias and
panels, you can inspect this same space from the passenger side, by lifting
the thin plastic rain protector thing over the air plenum. The space
between the wall and the evaporator is only a few inches, but you can get a
small flat vacuum cleaner nozzle in there to vacuum out most of the debris.

Doing this improved the cooling ability of my 87 5ktq.

I took out about a cubic foot of leaves.
