Here in Norway, you can unregister your car just by removing the
plates and leaving them at the DMV. A car without plates is just like
another thing, no taxes or anything.. But _if_ you have the plates on
the car on January 1st, you have to pay full road tax (about $240 for
all passenger cars) for the whole year if you don't leave it at a
certified car recycler before March 15th..

If you have a car, you get about $170 when you leave it at a certified
recycler, no matter if it's been sitting without plates for many
years.
